Penn Forest National Burial Park Penn Forest is the first and only green cemetery in Pennsylvania

Penn Forest Natural Burial Park is Pennsylvania's first exclusively green burial ground and is committed to creating a beautiful burial park where nature is at the forefront,  Penn Forest is located 13 miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh on 35 acres in Penn Hills (close to Oakmont and Verona).  The burial ground is bordered by Plum Creek and is just a mile from the Allegheny River.

In addition to being an environment-friendly burial ground, a third of the land is set aside as a nature preserve habitat for native wildlife and plants.
Penn Forest offers both full body and cremated remains burial and cremated remains scattering sites.
We are happy to work with all funeral homes that are skilled in green burial practices.  Contact us for a list of local funeral homes certified by the Green Burial Council.
People of all faiths are welcomed.
Our Mission is to provide ecologically friendly burial and to restore our 35-acre forest.
We also operate Returning Home Farm, an extension of Penn Forest Natural Burial Park that provides model projects in sustainability.  Penn Forest owns 35- acres of land in Penn Hills/Verona area, but only about 2-acres are currently used for green burials.  Another 10-acres are set aside as a wildlife refuge area.  That leaves about 23-acres that can be used for other sustainability projects that benefit the community.
Ongoing projects include:
*Raising goats for clearing brush in burial areas
*Hiking trails
*Raising chickens and ducks for eggs (we share them with visitors when we have extra)
*Tree/shrub planting for forest restoration
*Bee hives
*A quarter acre native PA meadow restoration project
*Blacksmith training classes
Planned future projects include:
*A sally garden for raising willows for basket making (and maybe coffins)
*A hoop greenhouse for raising tea
*A berry garden
*A mushroom walk trail
*A Hugelkultur garden
We are always open to additional sustainability projects.  If you'd like to bring your project to RHF, please tell us your idea by contacting Pete McQuillin, Manager at   Or by calling 412-977-2207
